Chafer And Sound Doctrine And The Church

2 Timothy 2
15 Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

As I toil year by year over the Word of God, I wonder.  Why does Charles Sperry Chafer make more sense to me, overall, than, let's say, Arthur Pink?

Chafer on The Church
Let no student imagine that he has progressed far in sound doctrine if he does not comprehend the consistent teaching of the New Testament which declares that the Christian is not under the Law of Moses or any other form of obligation which has for aim the securing of merit.

Two Olive Trees 2

Zecharia 4
2 And [the Angel] said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof:
3 And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof.

Here we have an incomprehensible image, with no, earthly, explanation. But the Angel does provide heavenly explanations:

More From Zecharia 4
6 Then [the Angel] spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.

And More From Zecharia 4
14 Then said [the Angel], These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the LORD of the whole earth.

I've given the olive trees some thought, and have come to the conclusion that they represent Zerubabbel and Joshua the priest, part of the glorious Hebrew post-exilic history. I note that there are other, and probably, better interpretations.

But, the question for me is this: What is God's purpose in giving us the book of Zechariah? Maybe, it is to give us a better understanding of the Hebrews, God's first chosen people.  Maybe, it is to give us some insight into, some little understanding of the book of Revelations....maybe some insight into, some little understanding of the second coming of Christ.

Revelations 11
4 These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks.....

Almost forgot.  The two pipes are Ezra and Nehemiah.

Two Olive Trees 1

Zecharia 4
12 And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves?
13 And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord.
14 Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the LORD of the whole earth.

I stumbled on a wonderful book on Google books.  It includes the writings of the twelfth century medieval rabbi, biblical commentator, philosopher, and grammarian David Kimhi (or Kimchi). I became aware of Kimhi while reading John Gill, who notes the prominence of the Messiah in Kimhi's commentary. The book is, "Rabbi David Kimchi's Commentary Upon The Prophecies of Zechariah, Translated From The Hebrew With Notes, and Observations On The Passages Relating To The Messiah," by the Rev. A M'Caul, A.M., Trinity College Dublin, 1838.

I found the following comment by from Kimhi on Zechariah 4 intriguing.  It provides some food for thought on the book of Zecharia, and also maybe the book of Revelations, from a Jewish perspective.

 Rabbi David Kimhi's Commentary
"That stand by the Lord of the whole earth" - ....Behold, the olive-trees represent Zerubbabel and Joshua, and the two branches that proceed from them represent their deeds, for with their hands they began the building of the temple. The two golden pipes represent Ezra and Nehemiah, who came after them, and by the hands of these four, light and good went forth to Israel.

And so we have the four great Hebrews, Zerubbabel, Joshua Priest, Ezra and Nehemiah. And of course I should make that six, including Haggai and Malachi.  What is God's message from these books of the Bible? I am sure that He is pleased by Bible study. And it's a comforting effort.  But, still, what is His message here?

The Word Of God 3

Romans 15
4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

We do find the hope of salvation in our patient, daily study of those things that were written aforetimes. And it is this hope, based on the Word, that guides us in our daily lives, as we wait for Jesus' return.

The Word Of God 2

Acts 18
24 And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus.
25 This man was instructed in the way of the Lord....

Great preachers. They are our special gift from God. Apollos is an example of such a man.

More From Acts 18
28 For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publickly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.

And great preachers, no matter how elequent, do teach the basic Bible truths.

The Word Of God 1

2 Peter 1
21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Sometimes it's good to look back to basics.

1 Corinthians 2
6 .... we speak wisdom....not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:
7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

The Bible is the word of God. The the word of God contains doubtless, age-old truths. The the word of God contains hidden mysteries....

It's frigid cold, and the sun will come up in a few minutes. But now, the sky on the horizon is gray, streaked with deep purple-red. God.

Yes, it's a good day to get back to basics....

Baptist Confession Of Faith Of 1689

Romans 10
10 For with the heart man believes, resulting in righteousness,
and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

Spurgeon's Comments on the Baptist Confession Of Faith Of 1689
This little volume is not issued as an authoritative rule, or code of faith, whereby you are to be fettered, but as an assistance to you in controversy, a confirmation in faith, and a means of edification in righteousness.

Question.  Can this document of assistance to a poor sinner who attends a Baptist church in Garfield New Jersey?

No answers today....

Spiritual Leaders And Judgement Day

Hebrews 13
17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

Hebrews is written to Jewish professed believers who, judging from Paul's comments in Romans and these comments here in Hebrews, had some difficulty with Christian doctrine.

Philippians 2
12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

In Philippians salvation is very personal.  It focuses on the personal efforts of these Philippian Christians. I think the message is: "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling," because:

Romans 14
11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

You live your Christian life, day by day, as best as you can. But, in the end, there won't be any one standing by you or talking for you. Brother Cloud, Elder Lassaire Bradley, Brother Gary Morgan, Dr. Bauder, Billy Graham, even your own pastor, none of them will be there with you.

It will just be you and Jesus. Your day of redemption will have drawn nigh. But, it will also be your day of reckoning.

So, What Is Important?

So, what is important to the Christian? How should he focus his effort? How should he spend his day?

1 Corinthians 10
32 Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:

He should get along with his fellow Christians. Whether they be Jews, or Gentiles. Or really annoying.

1 Corinthians 10
33 Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

He should, in any way he can, seek the profit of others, and help to assure the salvation of his fellows.

1 Corinthians 10
31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

But most of all, do whatever, to the glory of God.

The Seventy Elders, The Great Assembly and The Sanhedrim

Over the holidays I spent some time reading about post-captivity Jerusalem, as found in Ezra, Nehemiah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi. I also ended up reading about the Great Assembly and the Sanhedrim.

Exodus 24
1 And he said unto Moses, Come up unto the LORD, thou, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abi'hu, and seventy of the elders of Israel; and worship ye afar off.
2 And Moses alone shall come near the LORD: but they shall not come nigh; neither shall the people go up with him.

Here in Exodus we see Hebrew governance, for the first time, in the form of a group of elders.

Nehemiah 9
38 And because of all this we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, Levites, and priests, seal unto it.

Here in Nehemiah we see Hebrew governance continue to develop as the Great Assembly comes into being.

Matthew 26
67 Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands,
68 Saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ, Who is he that smote thee?

And after Moses' seventy elders, after Nehemiah's sealed Great Assembly, we have the fully developed "council" or Sanhedrim in Matthew 26, trying Jesus.  And finally:

Matthew 27
1 When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:

Chilling....

The Rich Man

Matthew 19
21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

I have considered this passage until my head hurts. Here are some questions.
Is Jesus' message directed to the Jews?
Is Jesus' message directed to the Pharisees?
Is Jesus' message directed to the gentiles, before his death and resurrection?
And, most important, Is Jesus' message directed to Christians, after his death and resurrection, now, in the church age?
1 John 4
2  Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

I do know the pat interpretations of this passage.  Be that as it may, this passage still makes me uncomfortable.

1 Chronicles 3
19 And the sons of Pedai'ah were, Zerub'babel, and Shim'e-i: and the sons of Zerub'babel; Meshul'lam, and Hanani'ah, and Shelo'mith their sister:

I've lately been reading the Bible books of the post-captivity period and I wanted to check out Rashi's comments on Zerubbabel's father.  But, I could not get the chabad.org web pages with his comments to load properly.  So I wrote an email to their contact:

My Email To chabad.org
I have enjoyed periodically referring to your Bible with Rashi commentary as part of my Bible studies. I am a Baptist and like any number of Baptists past and presant, I enjoy reading and studying the Hebrew commentators, such as Rashi, David Kimhi, ibn Ezra and Maimonides.

The other day I clicked on a passage from Nehemiah in your online Bible and found that the Rashi comments are no longer visable. Only grey shading appears with I check off "Show Rashi Commentary."

Please let me know what I'm doing wrong. I may not be loading the pagers properly.

Any consideration you might give to this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Mr. Kulick,
Thank you very much for sharing, you are doing nothing wrong. The material has been removed for maintenance as the publishers are in the process of performing some upgrades, and have asked us to perform them as well.

I apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

Best wishes,

Nehemiah 12
1 Now these are the priests and the Levites that went up with Zerub'babel the son of She-al'ti-el, and Jesh'u-a: Serai'ah, Jeremiah, Ezra,

So who was Zerubbabel's father?

Haggai, Zechariah, Zerub'babel, and Joshua, Son of Jehozadak

Zechariah 3
8 Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH.

Hebrew tradition, which appears to have had some influence on our Baptist forefathers, concludes that the BRANCH does not refer to the Christ but to Zerub'babel, the righteous Hebrew king (or Governor) of Judea in the post-captivity. Following is more on Zerub'babel, the Christ-like figure.

Haggai 2
23 In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, will I take thee, O Zerub'babel She-al'ti-el, saith the LORD, and will make thee as a signet: for I have chosen thee, saith the LORD of hosts.

Those must have been wonderful, hopeful times. The Hebrews were back in Jerusalem, the temple was being built.  They had a good king, Zerub'babel, they had a good priest, they had Joshua, the righteous high priest, and they had two great prophets, Haggai and Zechariah.

Kind of reminds me of Richard Nixon and Billie Graham. Then again, maybe not....

Man And God - Bond Servants Or Heirs Of God, Through Christ

Subject? Church, man and God, tithing  2d read?????? Christian liberty?  The basis of Christian living.

Galatians 4
7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

This passage describes a Christian's relationship to God through Christ under grace. Here's the definition of servant, one key word in the passage.

Strong's Greek Definition for servant (# 1401)
 //  doulov  //  doulos   //  doo'-los  //
1) a slave, bondman, man of servile condition
1a) a slave
1b) metaph., one who gives himself up to another's will those whose service is used by Christ in extending and advancing his cause among men
1c) devoted to another to the disregard of one's own interests
2) a servant, attendant

Here, Paul contrasts the Jews relationship God and the Christians relationship to God.

Galatians 3
23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

So, under grace we are no more slave to the law. And, we give account to no one, except
God:

Romans 14
11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

And 1 Corinthians 7
20 Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called.
21 Art thou called being a servant? care not for it: but if thou mayest be made free, use it rather.
22 For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant, is the Lord's freeman: likewise also he that is called, being free, is Christ's servant.
23 Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men.
24 Brethren, let every man, wherein he is called, therein abide with God.

Peter And The Church (And Babylon?)

1 Peter 5
13 The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you; and so doth Marcus my son.

When I retire, and if might have the mind for it, I would like to spend a year studying about and writing about the subject of Babylon in the Bible. Then, I would like to spend a year studying about and writing about the subject of the Kingdom in the Bible.

That being said, this post just notes the odd occurance of the word Babylon - in 1 Peter 5. I do not want to forget the passage above: It helps - me - to understand Daniel and Revelations.
